The Bavarian restaurant in the old town of Munich skilfully manages the balancing act between tradition and modernity.

Surrounded by magnificent house facades, in the middle of a spacious pedestrian zone and opposite the historic Hofbräuhaus, the Ayinger am Platzl is located. The upscale inn is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Munich – a place that breathes history.

The Bavarian restaurant is as deeply rooted in Munich’s history as the beer culture. It was first mentioned in records in 1525 – today it is run by the Inselkammer family in the third generation. Similar to the location of the building is the food offer and the furnishings of the Ayinger am Platzl.

Wood-panelled walls in the interior along with chic metal elements, cosy seating niches and rustic antlers create stylish Bavarian flair. A real eye-catcher is the new bar counter, which went into operation in mid-2021. Fine copper meets fir green tiles here.

The Ayinger am Platzl thus skilfully manages the balancing act between tradition and modernity – in accordance with the self-proclaimed motto “Living inn tradition at a historic site”. Matching: The menu with must-haves of local cuisine such as ox cheeks, roast pork and fried chicken. There are also two fish dishes and vegetarian-vegan dishes such as chickpea gnocchi or herb mushrooms, as well as various soups and salads. Everything in top quality and interpreted in a modern way. The ingredients also come exclusively from regional producers.

We follow the recommendation of the day – a wonderfully tender entrecote – and also try the Wiener Schnitzel. Delightfully thin, delightfully delicious! We are also particularly fond of the two desserts: wheat beer tiramisu and the Kaiserschmarrn with caramelized almonds. A dream – and presented just as attractively as all the other courses!

In addition, we traditionally enjoy an Ayinger Lager Hell, freshly tapped from the wooden barrel, and a Spatzl – the in-house version of Aperol Spritz with a dash of blood orange liqueur from the Bavarian distillery Bavarian Moonshine together with lime juice, chocolate bitters and Riesling sparkling wine. Wonderfully refreshing and a great, less bitter alternative to the Italian classic.

In general, the Ayinger am Platzl is a wonderful place to enjoy Bavarian cuisine as well as the internationally renowned beer of the family-run brewery and the Munich way of life. The house with its rich, Gothic façade and wide bay window is not a listed building for nothing. In addition, the attentive service, good food and the view of picturesque buildings and strolling walkers all around – as idyllic and worth seeing as a postcard motif.
