Red wine in summer? And then chilled too? What caused frowns a few years ago is now becoming a trend. The Côtes du Rhône show what modern red wine enjoyment can look like: two clearly defined flavour profiles and a new recommendation for the ideal serving temperature.

Red wine consumption in France has been declining for years, particularly in the segment of classic, heavy red wines. However, the Côtes du Rhône wine region in the south of France, whose red wines account for around 86% of total production, is bucking the trend with innovative ideas: Two clearly defined red wine profiles and the recommendation to enjoy all wines – including red wines – chilled. This new, modern wine culture also appeals to a younger target group and proves that tradition and zeitgeist harmonise perfectly in the glass.

Two red wine profiles, one terroir – and many possibilities
The first red wine profile stands for fresh, fruity and round wines with flavours of red berries, floral notes and a lively, harmonious mouthfeel. The second profile offers complex, spicy red wines with dark fruits, spicy notes and, in some wines, light wood flavours – structured, deep and elegant, ideal for special moments.

Naturally fresh: the Côtes du Rhône terroirs and their cooling potential
The southern Rhône is a warm wine-growing region – and yet its wines are characterised by remarkable freshness. How is this possible? Through a combination of unique climatic and geological factors. A decisive factor for the natural freshness of the Côtes du Rhône wines is the mistral, which blows through the vineyards for up to 150 days a year, cooling the vines, moderating the summer heat and reducing fungal infestation – ideal conditions for sustainable cultivation. The clay and sandy soils store moisture and enable deep root growth, which gives the wines structure, minerality and balance. At the same time, the wind promotes evaporation, which concentrates sugar and acidity in the berries – this ensures natural freshness. Depending on the location, the terroir brings elegance or strength to the glass and thus characterises the stylistic diversity of the Côtes du Rhône wines.

Enjoy cool – even red wine
The temperature has a great influence on the taste experience: if red wine is too warm, alcohol and heaviness dominate; if it is too cold, tannins become hard and flavours dull. The Côtes du Rhône show this: Served moderately chilled , their red wines bring out their full potential – especially their fruity nuances.

The “20-20 rule” makes it easy:

  • Remove white wine from the fridge 20 minutes before serving – the ideal drinking temperature is between 10 and 12°C
  • Place the red wine in the fridge 20 minutes before serving – the ideal drinking temperature is 15-16°C

Tip for blast chillers: Place the bottle in ice water with coarse salt – this lowers the temperature particularly quickly and effectively.

Côtes du Rhône / Inter Rhône
Wines from the Côtes du Rhône denote the various sites and appellations from the Rhône valley. Wines from the Côtes du Rhône are produced in a specific geographical area – in the south-east of France – which is known for wines with the appellation. The most commonly used grape varieties in the Côtes du Rhône are Grenache noir, Mourvèdre and Syrah for red wines, Cinsault, Camarèse and Carignan for rosé wines and Clairette, Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Bourboulenc and Grenache blanc for white wines. The Rhone Valley (Vallée du Rhône) accounts for 9% of the total wine-growing area in France. In terms of volume, it ranks second among the French AOC regions.

My personal pleasure conclusion

A glass of chilled Côtes du Rhône red wine is like a breath of fresh air on a warm summer evening – surprising, invigorating and full of character. The fruit flavours shine, the spice dances and the elegance remains intact. The chilled version in particular reveals a new, light attitude to life – uncomplicated, modern and incredibly enjoyable. It feels as if tradition itself has decided to loosen the tie a little. Santé!
