ALCANTARA IN THE ARTS: The Milan Triennale and Alcantara present a special exhibition curated by Damiano Gullì: a new kind of journey into the historical archives of Alcantara.

SHARE

Alcantara In the Arts: eine einzigartige Reise, die die Geschichte der mehrjährigen Experimente der Made-in-Italy-Marke in der Welt der Kunst, des Designs und des Theaters erzählt.

Curated by Damiano Gullì, curator of contemporary art and the Triennale’s public programme, the exhibition offered a novel dialogue between Alcantara and some Italian and international artists, different in generation, practice and poetics, who over the years have been able to explore the infinite creative potential of the material and express it through their works: Yuri Ancarani, Alberto Biasi, Zhang Chun Hong, Qin Feng, Soundwalk Collective, Nanda Vigo and Lorenzo Vitturi.

Alberto Biasi
TORSIONE SOVRAPPOSTA – SUPERIMPOSED TORSION

The common thread is the relationship between matter and art: in Überlagerte Verdrehung, a work by Alberto Biasi that opens the exhibition tour, the artist continues his investigation into the perception of reality and creates alienating and changing optical effects at the slightest change in the viewer’s point of view.

Yuri Ancarani
THE LANDSCAPE OF THE FUTURE

The video The Landscape of the Future by Yuri Ancarani focuses on dynamic movements of the material, emphasising its lively sensuality and transforming it into gently moving waves.

Qin Feng
INFINITY OF TEMPLES

In Qin Feng’s work Infinity of Temples, the spontaneity of the calligraphic movement releases a primal energy that expresses Wu Wei’s Taoist philosophical principle of “action through inaction”.

Zhang Chun Hong
FALL

In Autumn by Zhang Chun Hong, nature, body and calligraphy are merged into one. Based on the inspiration of a woman’s long hair painted in the Gongbi style – a realistic technique of Chinese painting characterised by great accuracy of detail – the artist creates a sculptural installation that evokes vitality, sexual energy, growth and beauty.

Lorenzo Vitturi
THE GARDEN INSIDE THE THREAD

In The Garden in the Yarn, Lorenzo Vitturi works on changing the proportions in various steps from micro to macro and has enlarged parts of images from the different production phases of the Alcantara material, transforming them into multiform sculptures with iridescent colours that bring a psychedelic and dreamlike garden to life.

Nanda Vigo
ARCH/ARCOLOGY

Science fiction imagery and architectural design merge: with Arch/Arcology, Nanda Vigo transforms a floor plan drawing by architect Paolo Soleri from the 1960s into a three-dimensional reality.

Soundwalk Collective
RESONANCE

The soundtrack Resonanz by Soundwalk Collective is based on an alienating encounter between the artificial and the natural: a soundtrack created from the processing of mechanical noises and ambient sounds generated during the production of the Alcantara material.

Each work shows the viewer Alcantara’s ability to create an open, inventive and experimental dialogue with the avant-garde of all artistic practices, becoming an integral part of the creative process not only as a medium that interprets visions, but also as a generator of them.

Editor’s tip

Alcantara is a very interesting material that has many applications in the art world. Another very interesting exhibition took place in Korea. Read the article here: https://go-sixt.com/art/beyond-boundaries/
